    How humming-and-guessing works on HumHigh

Tap the record button, hum any song for up to 10 seconds, and HumHigh generates a shareable link. Send it to one friend or post it in a group chat.

Whoever opens the link hears your hum and picks the correct song from four AI-generated options. The faster they guess, the higher the score. Streaks build across rounds and survive a missed day per week.

All audio is stored as base64 with a 7-day retention window — nothing requires installing an app, signing in, or sharing your microphone with a third party.

    Hum-and-guess — frequently asked

How does Google guess songs from humming?

Google's Hum to Search feature, launched in 2020, uses a neural network that converts your hum into a numerical fingerprint and matches it against a database of song fingerprints. HumHigh works differently: instead of identifying the song for you, it sends your hum to a friend who guesses from four options — turning identification into a game.

Can you really guess a song just from someone humming?

Yes, often within 10 seconds. Studies on melodic memory show humans can identify familiar songs from as few as 2 to 4 notes when the contour and rhythm are preserved. HumHigh helps by showing four plausible answers, so your friend chooses the closest match instead of recalling the title from scratch.

What is the best song to hum for a guessing game?

Pick a song with a strong, distinctive melodic hook in the chorus — for example Bohemian Rhapsody, Smells Like Teen Spirit, Shape of You or Rolling in the Deep. Avoid songs whose hook is mostly rhythm or production effects, since those don't survive humming.

How long does it take to play?

Recording a hum takes about 10 seconds. The friend who opens the link guesses in under 30 seconds. A full back-and-forth round takes 1 to 2 minutes from tap to result.

Do I need an account to hum and send?

No. Tap record, hum, get a link. The optional sign-in only saves your guessing streak across devices and lets you receive push notifications when a friend replies.

    Is the hum recording private?

Yes. Recordings are stored as base64 audio in a Supabase database with row-level security, expire after 7 days, and are never used for advertising, training, or shared outside the link recipient.
